The division of Germany after World War II led to different approaches to dealing with their Nazi pasts. Internment camps were used, with poor conditions in the Soviet zone. Differences between zones arose during the re-employment proces...

Around the year 2000, I had him as a neighbor in Berlin-Mitte. 100 meters away was a small, exclusive bar where you often met him in the evenings. I remember a few very interesting conversations with him over a few beers. The study in his large apartment was still decorated with GDR memorabilia, the GDR and SED flag, etc.. In 2000, however, he was already able to laugh about many of the GDR's peculiarities, but he still took others very seriously.

I was born in Merseburg and never knew we had the German central archive. The pollution was indeed quite terrible. I developed pseudo croup at least two times as a kid and after reunification they sent us on 14 day long class trips two times a year so we could breath some clean air for a change.

Why did they force that false 1:1 ratio between the two Germanys' currencies during their union? Pretending a currency is worth four times as much as it really is will _always_ have bad consequences.

When Stalin was in the GDR, beautiful streets and buildings were built, but after his death, globalists came to power, who specifically began to build nondescript panel houses, erected the Berlin wall and gradually worsened the living conditions of the population in order to destroy the socialist system. The same thing happened in the USSR

You have tons of great content on your channel that I am eating up. I'm not sure why there is such a distinct lack of information on the GDR unlike the Soviet Union or Communist China. Either way, your channel fills that niche exceptionally well. I see you made a video on the NVA which was excellent of course but can you make a video on the East German Airforce as well? Also can you make a video about the military structure and training NVA personnel received? I cant find very much information on those topics. Thank you! I have subscribed!

In my youth I visited the DDR in 1987. Lifestyle for the population was horrendous, with a shortage in everything. Every product was very low quality, dark streets and poor apartments. Thinking it was a restaurant, we stopped by mistake in one of these villas in the outskirts of East Berlin, where an elegant party was taking place. Waitresses in uniform, tuxedos, drinks and food, Volvo and Mercedes Benz (yes, the Mercedes of the West) with DDR plates parked outside. We were expelled abruptly by the security guards, who realised that we were foreigners. We were lucky not to get in trouble, I guess. What an experience the DDR. Lessons of socialism.

I came to Berlin at the beginning of May 2024. For sure the PdR was an ugly building, but I don't really know if the reconstruction is worth it from an economical POV. It feels like a Disneyland building, trying to represent a castle from a German empire that is not here any more. For tourists it is almost shocking to see that buildings that were witnessing the GRD are disappearing very fast, but surely I can understand that some Berliners have suffered a lot and want to get rid of them. In my case I think that some marks of the past have to stay, being good or bad memories. The same goes for colonial statues in my opinion, because they can help a lot of people to be aware of the past. But I never was discriminated or persecuted, and I am no historian. So I am not here to judge.

Let this be a lesson to everyone, there hasn't been a Socialist / Communist government anywhere that hasn't resorted to secret police and other methods for surpressing dissent. No matter how benevolent they present themselves in the end it's always about power. "Keep your mouth shut and do as you're told! WE know best!" Live and learn people.

Exactly like here in Venezuela. Here in Caracas, the communist chavista elite live in the mansions of the "ancien regime", which they are proud to have "toppled". They even have their own built in gas stations. Why? Because gasoline is scarce... in the country with the greatest oil reserves in the world. That's socialism for ya.

13:20 -> There are everywhere people with a conscience who refused to carry out heinous orders, whatever the consequences for themselves. In the early hours of June 5th 1989, sustained gunfire could be heard coming from the forbidden city in Peking according to on the spot reports by the Western news agencies. With the repression, it was quickly forgotten. In fact it was the purge by shooting of the courageous PLA officers & men who protested the orders of shooting on the students. The second to fall were the workers in the little streets leading to the central place, who tried to block the passage of the tanks and troops.
